The services of seven local or ward agents were secured ami used during the severity of uiid-wiuter.

Tlio esiecial duty of the local agents is to obtain all necessary information iu relation ta applicants for aid, unci to such as need furnish the desired assistance. It is the design of the Association to aid all fur whom no other provision is made. Aud to do this with judicious humanity is a tak more onerous and difficult than many suppose, for it is not tlie intention of the Aaauciaiion to extend relief to the poor indiscriminately, but chiefly to the) following classes 1st. Indigent widows and deserted wives with young children, who in struggling to support and properly train their families are often overtaken by want and who bv a little timely and judicious aid inav thus be not only relieved from iKtsitive suffering, but often saved from degradation aud vice. 2d, Educated and oven accomplished females who have beeu reduced from comfortable 4'ircuuisiances to dependence and who now are without the ability to earn a support being nninstructed iu any useful art or employment and havs neither strength nor skill to engage In remunerative occupation.

Although less than one-third of the number assisted were American, yet they received full three-lifths of the whole amount, for in uearl every one of these families was sickness, death or permaucntpositive want; while with others emphatically with the Irish the want was temporary, many requiring only a little bread in times of storm or very severe wea ther.
