Escape from Death on thi New Jebbv Kailboad The pns-cngers by the 7 o'clock mail train for Kew York, yenturday morning, made a most fortunnto ejeape from a terrible calamity, thai seemed for a few moments to h'S inevitable. As tho train enrol I'niouiown, on the New Jersey Kailroad, between Now ilrunswiek and Rahway, it was perceived that some men ware engaged with a team in hauling a huge log across the track. Seeing the train coming thoy unharnessed the team, leaving the log direotly across tho track The engineer stopped off tho steam and reversed the engine. The fireman leaped from the train, and was followed by the two engineers and the conductor, Mr. Wm.

Coultor. Cel. Lei ly, the mail agent, was the only one attached to tho train that remained upon it. The engine continued its speed with but little abatement, and, striking tho knocked it off the track, and before the passengers were aware ol me imminence of their danger, it was pasod. The firamae was, however, terribly injured by hie leap and it is feared, cannot survive.

The engineers escaped unhurt. The conductor was severely injured, and although able to continue at his post remained si Je.sey City upon his arrival there. The engine and cow-catcher were damnged by the collision with the log. 'Ihe engine is one 01 the coal-burning description, and its inline' se weight and power was possibly ihe cause of this most fortunate escape." A. Timt: Fred.
